What is playing small? Firstly, think about this, was there ever a moment you were hindered by yourself from revealing your fullest potential? For example, you stayed quiet even when you were itching to voice out, or you felt as if you shrunk yourself to fit comfortably in an intense situation? That is playing it small. In other words, it is when you pass on the tiniest gaps of opportunities that could have allowed you to shine your capabilities just because something inside your mind told you to play it safe. If you have ever felt this way, you are not alone, it is a natural reaction for someone to choose not saying anything over saying or doing the wrong thing.

Playing it safe might feel like a safe and stress-free option, but it’s in fact a silent killer of growth. Imagine staying at home for a long period of time just because you love the comfort, but what subconsciously fades is your ability and confidence in navigating the outside world. Similarly, passing on opportunities makes goals that felt possible seem out of reach. Hence, stepping out of your comfort zone and owning your potential is necessary for personal growth.

Let’s dive into the steps on how you can take the first step in realising your fullest potential.

Identify What Is Holding You Back

Through reflection, discover what is truly holding you back from stepping into your greater potential. Are you scared to be judged, do you fear failures or are you afraid of the responsibilities that come with greater power itself? By knowing exactly what the source of hindrance is, you will be able to gauge a starting point to deal with it.

Take Up Space (physically and energetically)

If you are used to being that person that enters a room unnoticed and always conceal yourself behind shadows, you play small. If you avoid eye contact, steer clear of slightly uncomfortable interactions, you shrink and you play small. Undoubtedly, you miss out on the greatest opportunities to meet the powerful, and in other words, you lose your chances to learn to become powerful. Instead, amend your body language and walk with humility but confidence. Trust me, people will notice and with practice, the volume of your energy will become unavoidable.

Drop the Fear of Being “Too Much”

Many people hold themselves back out of fear of being seen as too loud, too opinionated, or too ambitious. Ironically, it’s often those who play small that make these snide remarks. If you believe in something, be confident and command respect for it rather than seek approval. However, it is crucial to note that confidence isn’t speaking about anything with little concern of the impact of your words. Those with real influence choose their words wisely, speak with conviction, and carry themselves with purpose.

Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable

Growth never happens when you play small and keep to your comfort zone. It is essential to stretch your limits and face your anxieties to allow growth to materialise. If there is something you have always wanted to do, this is your sign to go out there and do it even if it scares you. Put yourself out there even when you feel unqualified, this will help you much more than playing it small.

Surround Yourself With People Who Think Big

If you are constantly around people who think small, you will play small. Choose to seek role models that will inspire you, spend time with ambitious and proactive friends instead of those who keep you trapped in self-doubt. Growth thrives in the company of those who challenge and uplift you. Put yourself out there—attend social events, engage with people from all walks of life, and embrace new perspectives. Every interaction holds a lesson, and the more you expose yourself to different experiences, the more you expand your own potential.

You were not born to blend in—you were born to stand out. Playing small won’t protect you, it will only confine you.
